The David Bodycombe puzzles are published in my local paper, the Detroit Free Press. The one from yesterday (1/27) was rated 5 stars. It is not particularly difficult, but it is the first daily newspaper puzzle I have seen which requires a little more than basic techniques. Here it is:

Hi,

after setting 22 digits in the:

  2 5 . 8 . . . . .
  . . . . 9 . 8 . 2
  9 . . 4 . 7 . . .
  6 4 . . . . . 9 .
  . 9 . 1 . 3 . 4 .
  . 7 . . . . . 2 1
  . . . 5 . 4 . . 7
  7 . 6 . 8 . . . .
  . . . . . 1 . 8 3

I started from digit 5 in r3c9.
1. path - 5 <> r4c9, 5 = r4c5, 5 <> r5c5
2. path - 6 = r5c9, 6 <> r5c5
and from both pathes there is no digit left to be set in r5c5 !
meaning we can exclude 5 from r3c9.

the rest is standard techniques.

after setting 23 digits with standard techniques,
I start with digit 4 from r4c3:
1. path - 4 <> r4c1
2. path - 4 <> r4c5, 9 = r4c5, 9 <> r4c1
3. path - 4 <> r6c1, 6 = r6c1, 6 <> r4c1
and now there are no digits left for the cell r6c1,
and this means that we can exclude 4 from r4c3.
