I did find a path that doesn't include the xy or xyz-wings.
two stepper:
a nice {2,8} w-wing that removes the 8 from r4c5
which leads to coloring on 8. |

I wasn't trying to avoid wings. It was a three-stepper, the first of which wasn't necessary.

I also found the UR26 and xy-wing124, but then found a xy-wing268 and a BUG+1 to complete the puzzle. I have no idea what was really useful.
This puzzle was definitely more enjoyable than the VH puzzle today.

| The other {2,8} w-wing transports nicely to give r5c3=2. From there a skyscraper on 8 kills it off. |
