Let's start by simplifying your grid a little::

Code:

1     4   58     2    3      9   67  5678   57
7     9    6   145  148    458    3    58    2
2     3   58    57    6    578    1     9    4

39   26  (23) 4679  479  24679    5     1    8
4    26    1     8    5      3  267    67    9
59    8    7   169   19     26   26     4    3

568   7    9    56    2    568    4     3    1
356   1    4 35679   79    567    8     2   57
358  25   23 3457   478      1    9    57    6

Note that the possibilities {3, 6, 9} and {5, 6, 9} in r4c1 and r6c1 can be simplified because the value "6" must appear either in r7c1 or r8c1. Note also that the value "7" must appear in either r5c7 or r5c8 ... there's no other way it can fit in the middle right box. So that means you need to put a "5" in r5c5, and I think you're on your way. dcb Smile

Thanks David! I missed two obvious things - how could I you miss them when I'd gone over and over a thousand times!
How did you make my grid in nice orderly columns? When I enter it like that it still comes out with only one space between each number or group of numbers.

Maybe you over-analyzed the position. I do that sometimes. When I've already enumerated all the possibilities, I may overlook the obvious because my worksheet is just too cluttered. When that happens I find it best to start over and concentrate only on the pairs I've identified, then the triplets, etc.

You need to use the "Code" and "/Code" tags. You may want to read the information at the "FAQ" link, up near the top of any bulletin board page. Briefly, if you enclose text between a "Code" tag and a "/Code" tag, the phpbb software will present that information in a fixed width font -- then the spaces between your numbers will be the same size as the numbers themselves, and the editor won't compress the extra blanks out.

Here's an example of "Code":
Code:
Notice how this text appears in a fixed width font.

When I set up one of these tables I find it best to paste the information into a simple text editor (like Notepad, on Windows, or Kate, on Linux) that uses a fixed width font. Or I may put it into Word for Windows and set the font to "Courier New". After I get the table set up the way I want it I just paste it back into the message composition window over here (in between the "Code" and "/Code" tags, of course).

Have a great day! dcb Smile

DAVID you're a gem! I've investigated the code facility enabling the original formatting to remain unchanged ..... THANK YOU, you are a very helpful person and such an asset to this great site. Very Happy
